Chinese New Year festivities set for Jan. 31 10:13 a.m., Jan. 23, 2004--Members of the Chinese Cultural Student Association will usher in the Year of the Monkey, 4701, with traditional Chinese festivities on Saturday, Jan. 31. The celebration, which runs from 7-9:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall, will include a kung fu demonstration by University of Delaware students, traditional music performed by the Chinese Community Association Youth Orchestra, a Chinese opera, a cross-talk skit and traditional dances, including the lion and Daizu dances. The presentations are designed to showcase Eastern customs while increasing cultural pride, awareness and curiosity on campus. Chinese New Year, which is also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. This years Chinese New Year began on Thursday, Jan. 22, with the first new moon of 2004. The traditional celebration lasts for 15 days, until the first full moon of the new year, and typically concludes with parades, fireworks and displays of brightly burning lanterns. Originally a religious ceremony, the Chinese New Year honors household gods and family ancestors, as well as the union of heaven and Earth. Individual tickets for the Jan. 31 event are $5 each and $3 each for groups of five or more.
