New Music Delaware: Festival of Contemporary Music presents Network For New Music Oct. 15

11:06 a.m., Oct. 13, 2003--New Music Delaware: Festival of Contemporary Music presents the Philadelphia-based ensemble Network for New Music in a program of new compositions at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15. Sponsored by UD’s Department of Music, the concert will be performed in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the Trabant University Center or Bob Carpenter Center box offices.

The program, “Rhythm in a World of Sound,” features the world premiere of Thomas Whitman’s Brahms-inspired “Quartet for Piano and Strings.” The work of Philadelphia composer Whitman has been described by Opera News as “Šdramatic music that soars into lyrical melodies, filled with allusive atmosphere and rich emotional textures.” Also featured are Mathew Rosenblum’s “Maggies” for ensemble and taped voice and Maurice Wright’s “Grand Duo.”

Widely acclaimed for its outstanding performances, the Network for New Music Ensemble has commissioned, premiered and presented a more than 475 new works. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, “The Network for New Music has become a powerful force in enlarging the chamber music repertory, with a long list of commissions to its creditŠthe ensemble’s virtuosity and ability to plumb emotional depths is supported by shrewd programming.”

New Music Delaware: Festival of Contemporary Music builds on the Department of Music’s tradition, dating back to the 1940s, of recognizing the work of living composers. Past featured composers who have visited campus include Vincent Persichetti, Lou Harrison, Aaron Copland, Joan Tower, Robert Ward, John Corigliano and many others. New Music Delaware currently features a regional composers competition and guest composer residencies in alternating years.
