Newark Community Day set Sept. 14

7:35 p.m., Sept. 5, 2003--Newark Community Day, an annual community-based festival, will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, and this year will be part of Freshman Family Weekend activities.

The fun stretches on The Green from Memorial Hall to Main Street; on Main Street from Elkton Road to Tyre Avenue; on the Academy Lawn; and at the Newark Shopping Center.

Presented by the city of Newark, Newark Arts Alliance, UD, Christina School District, and the Downtown Newark Partnership, the event offers visiting families the opportunity to explore downtown Newark.

Activities will include:

  • Live entertainment and demonstrations on four stages;
  • Fine art and homemade craft vendors and competitions;
  • Community information booths and activities;
  • Bazaar and flea market area;
  • Sidewalk chalk festival;
  • Art cars;
  • Dining and retail specials at downtown Newark merchants;
  • Live broadcast by The River (94.7FM);
  • Mini-moto (pocket bike) race course; and
  • Visits by YoUDee.

In case of inclement weather, Downtown Newark merchant and dining specials will still be available on Sept. 14, although most other Community Day activities will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21. To confirm the event status in case of inclement weather, call (302) 366-7147.

While the deadline for Freshman Family Weekend ticket orders to be received was Wednesday, Sept. 3, if available, tickets for Second City and the football game may be purchased in person at the University box offices (as noted on the Freshman Family Weekend web site) and tickets for the tailgate dinner and pep rally and Sunday brunch in the dining halls may be purchased at the door. A few events are sold-out and they are noted on the web site.
