UD alumni and consultant to be honored May 18

11:31 a.m., May 14, 2004--A UD consultant and two alumni will be honored for their service to Delaware communities during an awards gala Tuesday, May 18, at the Bank One Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington.

Leonard W. Quill, ’58, ’66 MBA, Fred C. Sears II, ’64, ’71 MBA, and Muriel E. Gilman, a consultant in the College of Health and Nursing Sciences, will receive the awards during the National Conference for Community and Justice annual dinner for their service and commitment that helps to create positive change for all people, according to Lisa Oursler, executive director of NCCJ.

Quill, former chairman and CEO of the Wilmington Trust Co., made a lasting impact with his understanding and dedication to Delaware communities, particularly in creating equitable housing opportunities, Oursler said.

Quill gives advice and counsel on higher education, health care and preserving Delaware’s history and is involved in the revitalization of Wilmington through his work with the Business Roundtable, Wilmington 2000 and the Diamond State Port Corporation, Oursler said.

As president and CEO of the Delaware Community Foundation, Sears has encouraged an increase in philanthropic giving and made a special effort to continue the work of the Youth Philanthropy Board, a program that prepares young people to become community leaders as they learn about the power of giving.

Gilman, a trained public administrator, directs both her paid and voluntary efforts toward enlightening the community and addressing problems affecting the equitable delivery of services and to ensure that all people enjoy good quality of life, regardless of race, creed or color, Oursler said.

“She accomplishes her goals with a passionate and pragmatic spirit, utilizing strong business skills and a sense of social consciousness,” Oursler said.

UD Provost Dan Rich will present the award to Gilman.
