NCBI database workshop set for Feb. 18-19 3:12 p.m., Jan. 26, 2004--A two-day workshop for science professionals is set for Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 18-19, at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute. The workshop, which begins at 9 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, with a lecture and overview, will be followed by a hands-on workshop that provides practical information about the many scientific databases maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). Databases that will receive specific attention are GenBank and RefSeq. Hands-on training also will provide instruction on the most effective ways to use Entrez and BLAST, the two main database search tools. Designed for principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and advanced undergraduate students and others in the life sciences who work with biological sequence data, the workshop will benefit both experienced and novice users of the NCBI database. Instructors are members of the NCBI training team and are experienced users of the database. The Delaware Biotechnology Institute is located in the Delaware Technology Park off Wyoming Road. Pre-registration is required for the course, with a rolling deadline until all seats are filled. Course capacity is 70; 25 vacancies are still available.
