Colman to give Named Professor Lecture

Roberta Colman, Willis F. Harrington Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry
4:46 p.m., March 30, 2004--Roberta Colman, Willis F. Harrington Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will deliver a Named Professor Lecture, at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 1, in 101 Brown Laboratory. Her topic will be “Exploring Interfaces: Between Enzyme Subunits and Chemistry/Biology.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Colman is program director of the Chemistry-Biology Interface Graduate Program. Her area of research is understanding the catalytic activity of proteins in terms of protein structure, including enzymes isocitrate dehydrogenases, glutathione S-transferases and adenylosuccinate lyase.

Among her honors, Colman is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received UD’s Francis Alison Award, an award for scientific achievement from the Delaware Section of the American Chemical Society, the Herbert A. Sober Award of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and UD’s College of Arts and Sciences Scholar Award.

Colman has served on the editorial boards of professional journals, including Protein Expression, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Purification and Protein Science and serves as the executive editor of Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. She also is a member of the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and chaired the Division of Biological Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.

A graduate of Radcliffe College, she received her doctorate from Radcliffe Graduate School of Harvard University. Colman served on the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School before joining the UD faculty in 1973.
