UD freshman Haney scores twice in loss to Lehigh

10:58 a.m., Sept. 18, 2003--University of Delaware freshman Matt Haney scored twice, although the Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s soccer team lost 5-2 to Lehigh University on Wednesday evening at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Haney became the first UD player to net two goals in a game since Mike Honeysett scored a pair on Oct. 28, 2001, in a 3-1 win against the University of New Hampshire.

Lehigh scored three goals within the first 15 minutes of the game and carried a 3-0 advantage into halftime. Scoring for the Mountain Hawks were Steve Fisher, Peter Classi and Maciek Serafin.

Delaware responded in the second half as Haney registered his first career goal at 56:22.

Lehigh retaliated 21 seconds later on Serafin’s second goal, then Haney scored again at 59:27. The Mountain Hawks closed the scoring at 71:11 as Fisher tallied a second time.

Delaware fell to 2-3-1 while Lehigh raised its record to 4-1-1.

The Hens return to action at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Baltimore to take on the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The Retrievers are 4-0-1 and ranked fourth in the South Atlantic region in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.
