Delaware men’s soccer to battle Virginia Tech

3:20 p.m., Aug. 20, 2003--The University of Delaware men’s soccer team will open the 2003 season against Virginia Tech with a game Friday, Aug. 29, in the Highlander Classic at the new 5,000-seat Cupp Memorial Stadium on the campus of Radford University in southern Virginia.

Delaware, coached by Marc Samonisky, will continue play in the tournament when it takes on host Radford on Sunday, Aug. 31.

Virginia Tech has strengthened its soccer program, and its goal is a Big East Conference title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Hokies feature All-South Atlantic forwards Ken Jonmaire and Peer Rogge.

Radford is a member of the Big South Conference.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will return home for a game against Monmouth University at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5, in the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

UD will be led this season by sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Haynes, who posted four shutouts and a goals against average of 1.62 in 2002, and senior midfielders Nathan Danforth and Stephen Mangat.
