UD men’s lacrosse team rallies for win over Hofstra

Ryan Metzbower scored three goals in UD’s victory over Hofstra.
11:57 a.m., April 5, 2004--Trailing by two with less than four minutes left in the game, the University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team ripped off four straight goals to defeat Hofstra University 12-10 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played before 1,000 fans on Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

For the Fightin’ Blue Hens, who entered the game ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division I, it was the first CAA victory in three seasons and the first time they had beaten Hofstra since 2000.

UD improved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA with two key conference games next on the schedule. The Hens will host Villanova University at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at Rullo Stadium, then will travel to Towson University for a game at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 14.

Villanova is 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the CAA after a 20-11 loss to Towson on Saturday. Towson, ranked No. 15 nationally, is 3-3 and 1-0 in the conference.

In Saturday’s victory, UD senior Ryan Metzbower scored two of his three goals in the final 2:42 of the game, including the game-clincher with 49 seconds left to play.

Junior Joe Trentzsch also scored three goals for the Hens, and Matt Alrich and Andy Hipple scored two goals apiece. Freshman Cam Howard had a goal and an assist.

The Hens, who converted just one of eight extra man opportunities on the night, held a commanding 54-22 advantage in shots and, largely through the efforts of freshman Alex Smith, won 15 of 25 face-offs.

Chris Unterstein led Hofstra with two goals and three assists. Ryan Miller had two goals and an assist and John Keysor scored twice. Goalkeeper Matthew Southard, who had an exceptional game, made 16 saves.

Neither team led by more than three goals the entire game, with UD jumping out to early leads of 4-1 and 5-2. Hofstra cut the UD lead to 5-4.

The third quarter featured several ties but the Hens took a 7-6 lead when Metzbower scored his first goal of the game with 4:29 left in the period.

The fourth quarter was a wild one, with three ties, two lead changes and five goals in the final four minutes.

Hofstra took an 8-7 lead with 12:06 left on a goal by Miller, but the Hens came back to tie the game on a goal by Howard with 7:49 left.

Hofstra then took control 10-8 as Miller fed Don Scott for a goal with 6:25 remaining and scored himself off an Unterstein assist with 3:43 left in the game.

UD rallied as Metzbower scored with 2:42 left to cut the lead to 10-9 and Alrich scored off a feed from Ryan Overs just 29 seconds later to tie the game at 10-10. Metzbower then put the Hens up for good when he scored an unassisted goal with just 49 seconds remaining.

Trentzsch scored an extra-man goal on an open net just 30 seconds later to clinch the win for the Hens.
