UD men’s lacrosse team upsets No. 18 Air Force

10:28 a.m., March 22, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team upset the No. 18-ranked U.S. Air Force Academy 7-6 in a game played Saturday at Rullo Stadium.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 6-2 as they prepare to face No. 13 University of Maryland Baltimore County at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 27, in Catonsville, Md.

Against Air Force, UD senior Ryan Metzbower scored two goals in the final quarter, including the game-winning extra man goal with 9:35 left to play.

Metzbower, Joe Trentzsch and Jordan Hall each scored two goals, and Andy Hipple had three assists.

UD goalkeeper Chris Collins had seven saves.

Greg Dangler and Justin Kuchta scored two goals each for Air Force, and William Meister had one goal and two assists.

The teams traded goals twice in the first quarter before Dangler scored with 48 seconds left to give Air Force a 3-2 lead.

Kuchta scored just 52 seconds into the second stanza to give the Falcons a 4-2 cushion.

UD tied the game 4-4 going into halftime as Hall scored unassisted and Trentzsch scored off a Hipple feed.

Kuchta and Dangler struck again early in the third quarter to give Air Force a 6-4 lead. UD’s Cam answered with an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 6-5 and set up Metzbower's fourth quarter heroics.

Metzbower tied the game as he took a feed from Matt Alrich and rifled a shot past Moss from 20 yards out and won the game on a goal off a pass from Hipple.
