Blue Hen men’s lacrosse falls to No. 8 Rutgers

10:45 a.m., March 8, 2004--The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 12-4 to host Rutgers University.

Rutgers, which is ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division I, improved to 2-0 on the season while the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 3-1.

UD will next face Mount St. Mary’s College in a game at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, at Rullo Stadium.

In Saturday’s loss, UD senior Matt Alrich scored two goals to extend his streak to 19 straight games. Freshman Cam Howard added a goal and an assist, and Ryan Metzbower also scored a goal for the Hens.

UD freshman Alex Smith, who entered the game having won 82 percent of his face-offs, won nine of 17 draws.

Ten Rutgers players scored goals, led by Colin Checcio, who had two goals and one assist, Tim White, who had two goals, and Chris Doctor, who had one goal and three assists.

Rutgers goalkeeper Greg Havalchak allowed just two goals and stopped 14 Blue Hen shots.

Rutgers scored two goals in the first three minutes to go up 2-0 but the Hens struck back and cut the lead to 2-1 on Metzbower's goal with 11:20 remaining in the opening quarter.

Rutgers responded with three straight goals, including two man-up goals by Checcio, to increase the lead to 5-1.

Alrich cut the lead to 5-2 with 9:46 left in the first half, but Rutgers scored the last two goals of the first half to take a 7-2 lead into intermission.

Rutgers scored the first five goals of the second half to put the game out of reach.
