Blue Hen men’s lacrosse defeats Stony Brook 11-4

10:55 a.m., March 1, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team continued its hot start with an 11-4 victory over Stony Brook University on Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

UD senior Matt Alrich and junior Andy Hipple combined for seven goals and four assists as the Fightin’ Blue Hens broke open a close game with six goals in the third quarter.

Alrich scored four goals and had two assists and Hipple had three goals and two assists as the Hens improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 1999 NCAA quarterfinal season.

Alrich, who leads the Hens with eight goals this season, has now scored at least one goal in 18 straight games dating back to last season.

Stony Brook, which was playing its season opener, got two goals from Adam Marksberry and a goal and an assist from George LaFare.

UD, which outshot Stony Brook 41-26, also got two goals and an assist from freshman Cam Howard and one goal and one assist from Ryan Overs.

Goalkeeper Chris Collins, last week's Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, made 15 saves.

UD jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Hipple and Ryan Metzbower but Stony Brook tied the game on goals by Marksberry and Adam Zetzer.

Alrich scored the final goal of the first quarter to give UD a 3-2 lead, and Hipple scored the only goal of the second quarter to increase the lead to 4-2 at the half.

UD put the game away early in the third quarter, scoring four goals in the first five minutes. Goal scorers were Hipple, Howard, Alrich and Overs.

The Hens held a commanding edge in face-offs as freshman Alex Smith won 17 of 19.

UD will visit Rutgers University for a game at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 6, before returning home to face Mount St. Mary’s at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 10.
