Blue Hen men’s lacrosse defeats St. Joseph’s 8-7

Matt Alrich had two goals in UD’s victory over St. Joseph’s.
11:14 a.m., Feb. 16, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team defeated St. Joseph’s University 8-7 on Saturday evening at Finnesey Field in Philadelphia.

UD fell behind 5-2 at the half but had a strong third quarter and won when junior midfielder Joe Trentzsch scored with 8:49 left to play.

The game, the season opener for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, was the first collegiate men's lacrosse game played this spring.

UD (1-0) will play at Lehigh University on Saturday, Feb. 21. The home opener will be played against Stony Brook University at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Rullo Stadium.

Trentzsch, a first-year transfer from Essex Community College near Baltimore, was the National Junior College Player of the Year last spring. In addition to the game winner, he also scored a goal and had an assist in the third quarter.

UD senior Matt Alrich, last year's team leader in goals with 35, also scored two goals and had an assist, and senior Ryan Overs had a goal and an assist.

Alex McColough and Mike Pagliaro each scored two goals for St. Joseph's, with McColough adding an assist.

The Hens had 38 shots to 30 for St. Joseph's, whose goalkeeper, Dan Morrissey, had 28 saves. UD junior Chris Collins had eight saves.

The Hens, coming off three straight losing seasons for the first time in school history, have now defeated St. Joseph’s in all four meetings.

UD had to rally for the win as the Hens fell behind 5-2 at halftime and needed five third quarter goals to get back into the game.

St. Joseph’s struck first in the third quarter, extending the lead to 6-2. UD answered at the 11:38 mark when Trentzsch scored his first goal. St. Joseph’s then went up 7-3 on a goal by Ryan Madairy but that was the last time the Hawks would score.

UD freshman Alex Smith scored just nine seconds after Madairy's goal to make it 7-4. The Hens then got goals from Overs, junior Andy Hipple and Alrich to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter, when Trentzsch scored the winner.
