UD mens basketball to host Loyola Dec. 10
The Fightin Blue Hens improved to 4-1 overall and 4-0 on the road. It was UDs fifth straight road victory overall, including the March 1 victory at Towson University to end the 2002-03 regular season. This is the longest such streak since 1998-99. The Hens return home to face Loyola College of Baltimore at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. In Saturdays victory, UD senior guard Mike Ames scored a season-high 24 points, and backcourt mate Mike Slattery added 16 points, including 11 from the foul line. David Lunn added 14 points, including a perfect eight for eight from the foul line, and Robin Wentt pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Slattery also had six assists. UMBC (2-2) was led by John Zito, who scored 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first seven minutes of the contest. Cory McJimson added 12 points for the Retrievers. UD overcame a difficult start in which the Hens missed their first 11 shots from the field and fell behind 16-3. Ames hit a jumper with 9:34 left in the first half to break the drought, and the Hens moved on to a 27-23 halftime lead. "We had a rough start tonight, but we did a good job of getting back in the game," UD Head Coach David Henderson said. "We played some good basketball in the second half and did a nice job down the stretch making some free throws and executing." UD stayed in control throughout the second half. UMBC made a run to cut the lead to six at 65-59 with 1:26 remaining but the Hens responded with some clutch foul shooting. The Hens connected on 25 of 32 shots from the foul line for the game, including 22 of 28 in the second half. After hosting Loyola, UD will take to the road for a game at Rider University (4-2) at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, then return home to host Siena College (3-3) at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23. A key home game awaits as the Hens will host nationally ranked St. Josephs University at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
