San Francisco beats buzzer, tops UD in men’s basketball

10:15 a.m., Dec. 1, 2003--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team dropped a 74-72 decision to the University of San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, as a jumper by guard Andre Hazel went in just before the final buzzer to complete a late San Francisco rally.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 2-1 despite 14 points from guard Mike Ames, 12 points from forward Robin Wentt and 11 points from David Lunn. The Hens lost their home opener for the first time in six seasons and for just the second time since the Bob Carpenter Center opened in 1992-93.

The tightly contested game featured 16 ties, and neither team led by more than six points the entire contest. San Francisco converted eight of 10 three-pointers and 14 of 18 free throws for the game. UD was just 15 of 24 from the foul line, including just nine of 16 in the second half.

The Blue Hens took a 33-29 lead into halftime and remained in front for the first six minutes of the second half before the Dons tied it up at 44-44 with 14:19 left to play.

San Francisco's Alan Wiggins Jr. converted a lay-up with 11:18 remaining to give the Dons their first lead since the first half at 51-49. The teams tied six more times in the next six minutes before the Hens took control at 67-63 on a lay-up by Wentt with 3:23 left to play.

But Tyrone Riley took over for San Francisco, hitting two three-pointers from the top of the key within a minute of each other for a 69-67 lead with 2:01 remaining.

A driving lay-up by Lunn tied the game at 69-69 with 1:04 remaining, but Riley followed with yet another big shot as he gathered up a loose ball and hit a controversial three-pointer from the left wing just before the shot clock expired, putting San Francisco up 72-69 with 26 seconds left.

Lunn came up big again for Delaware as he nailed a three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to tie the score again at 72-72. After a San Francisco timeout, Hazel dribbled into the lane and hit the winning shot from the left side of the line, putting the ball through the net just as the buzzer sounded.

UD now takes to the road for a pair of games. The Hens will play at Long Island University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 3, and at the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6.

UD will return to the Bob Carpenter Center for a game against Loyola College at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10.
