UD men’s basketball team to host San Francisco

10:23 a.m., Nov. 26, 2003--Clutch foul shooting by junior guard David Lunn helped lift the University of Delaware men’s basketball team to a 72-63 victory at American University on Tuesday night.

Lunn went a perfect eight for eight in the final 37 seconds of the game, as the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 2-0. It is the first time UD has opened the season with consecutive wins since 1999-2000, when the team started 4-0 on the way to an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.

After two games on the road, UD will play its home opener against the University of San Francisco at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

San Francisco is 2-3 with an early season upset over Ohio State University, 76-65, on Nov. 21.

In Tuesday’s victory, senior guard Mike Ames led four Blue Hens in double figures with 16 points. Lunn had 15 points, Calvin Smith had 14 points and nine rebounds and Mike Slattery had 13 and seven assists.

UD had a strong start, taking advantage of six American turnovers to build a 16-4 lead five minutes into the game. Ames scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half, and the Hens went into intermission with a 41-28 lead.

The lead increased to 16 points early in the second half as Slattery hit a jumper, Raphael Madera added a basket and Ames converted a free throw to make the score 46-30.

UD still led by 15 points at 56-41 with 9:36 left to play when American rallied, outscoring the Hens 18-6 over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to just three points at 62-59 with 1:50 remaining.

American still trailed by just three points at 64-61 when Lunn went to work, connecting on eight consecutive free throw attempts to seal the victory.
