UD men’s basketball defeats UNC Wilmington

UD’s Harding Nana scored 14 points in the victory over UNC Wilmington.
9:43 a.m., Feb. 17, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 62-61 in an important Colonial Athletic Association game played Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

UD sophomore Harding Nana scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

UD led the entire game but did not clinch the victory until UNC Wilmington guard John Goldsberry drove to the basket and then threw an errant pass into the hands of the Hens’ David Lunn as time expired.

With the victory, UD improved to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in the CAA. It was the Hens’ seventh win in their last 10 games and kept them ahead of UNC Wilmington, which fell to 12-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

The Hens have three regular season games remaining. They will travel to George Mason University for a game at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21, and then return home to the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center for key games against Virginia Commonwealth University at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, and against Drexel University at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28.

George Mason is just ahead of UD in the CAA standings at 9-5. Virginia Commonwealth and Drexel are tied with Old Dominion for the conference lead at 10-4.

The CAA tournament will be played March 5-8 at the Richmond (Va.) Coliseum.

UNC Wilmington, which defeated Delaware 50-49 back on Jan. 24 in Wilmington, NC, had a two-game win streak snapped to fall to 12-12, 8-8 CAA. Guard Ed Spencer was the only Seahawk in double figures with 11 points while Goldsberry added nine points and six assists and Beckham Wyrick pulled a team-high 10 rebounds.

In Monday’s game, Lunn came off the bench to score 11 points, and junior point guard Mike Slattery had six points and seven assists.

The Hens led the entire second half and extended the lead to eight points twice, going up 55-47 with 6:10 left on a lay-up by Nana and 57-49 on a dunk by Robin Wentt one minute later.

But UNC Wilmington chipped away at the lead, cutting the margin to 57-55 with 2:25 remaining when Mitch Laue converted a lay-up. Nana answered with a basket and a free throw to extend the lead to five at 60-55 with 1:48 remaining but the Seahawks made another push.

In a quick flurry, Goldsberry hit a three-pointer from the right wing, Lunn answered with two free throws and Joel Justus hit a three-pointer to trim the UD lead to 62-61 with 48 seconds remaining.

The Hens gained possession and worked the clock down but came away empty when Mike Ames missed on a difficult three-point shot with 11 seconds left.

Anthony Terrell got the rebound and fed Goldsberry, who raced down the right side of the floor. Three UD defenders stepped in to stop the drive and Goldsberry was forced to give up the ball and threw into the hands of Lunn.
