UD men’s basketball team tops JMU on buzzer-beater

Herb Courtney’s shot beat the buzzer and James Madison.
2:44 p.m., Feb. 2, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team earned its first Colonial Athletic Association road victory of the season when Herb Courtney tipped in a miss by Mike Slattery just before the final buzzer to defeat James Madison University 63-61 on Saturday night in Harrisonburg, Va.

With the win, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the CAA.

UD will continue on the road with a game at Hofstra University on Wednesday, Feb. 4, then will return home to the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center to face Towson University at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7.

In Saturday’s victory over James Madison, Courtney came off the bench to score 13 points and pull down nine rebounds.

Mike Ames and Rulon Washington each scored nine points for the Hens while Slattery had eight points and six assists.

Dwayne Broyles led James Madison with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Daniel Freeman, Chris Williams and Ray Barbosa scored nine points apiece.

The game featured 12 ties, and neither team ever led by more than six points. UD forged a 23-17 lead on a Slattery three-point basket with 8:25 left in the first half but the Dukes fought back to tie the game at 39-39 on a three-point play by Broyles with 56 seconds left. The Hens took a 41-39 lead into halftime when Calvin Smith tipped in a miss by Washington with four seconds left.

Although both teams struggled to score in the second half, James Madison managed to take a 48-43 lead on a Broyles lay-up with 14:04 left to play. UD came back to take a 53-52 lead on a three-pointer by Chris Prothro with 9:53 left and never trailed again.

James Madison tied the score at 55-55 and again at 59-59 with 2:28 remaining but could not pull ahead. Freeman tied the game for the final time with 17 seconds remaining when he hit two free throws.

That set the stage for UD’s winning basket when Slattery drove into the lane and put up a shot with two seconds left. He missed but Courtney grabbed rebound and tipped the ball in just before the buzzer sounded to give the Hens the victory.
