UD men’s basketball hosts GMU on Wednesday

Senior guard Mike Ames scored a game-high 15 points.
11:18 a.m., Jan. 26, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will host George Mason University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens are 10-7 overall and 4-4 in the CAA after a hard-fought 50-49 road loss at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

George Mason is 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference after a 74-70 victory over James Madison University on Saturday.

Tickets to Wednesday’s game cost $9 to $13, $5 for children, and are available at the UD box offices at the Bob Carpenter Center and the Trabant University Center or through Ticketmaster.

In Saturday’s game, UD attempted to repeat the late game heroics that saw the Hens defeat Old Dominion University and the College of William & Mary, but sophomore guard Rulon Washington was unable to sink an off-balance 25-foot shot at the buzzer.

Senior guard Mike Ames scored a game-high 15 points to lead UD. He connected on three three-pointers, increasing his career total to 203 and moving into second place all-time just eight shy of the record of 211 set by Kestutis Marciulionis in 1996-2000.

Herb Courtney pulled down nine rebounds for the Hens while Raphael Madera added eight rebounds and Robin Wentt seven.

UNC Wilmington, the two-time defending CAA champion, snapped a two-game losing streak as Ed Spencer and Halston Lane each scored 10 points and Anthony Terrell added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"I thought we played great today," UD Head Coach David Henderson said. "This is a tough place to win and I'm proud of the way our guys battled throughout the game. Sure we made some mistakes today, but we put ourselves in a position to win this game. It just didn't go our way this time."

UD, which committed 15 turnovers and shot just 34 percent from the field, got a three-pointer from Washington just before the halftime buzzer to take a 27-26 lead into intermission.

The Hens increased the advantage to 36-29 on a basket by Wentt with 15:35 left but UNC Wilmington bounced back, taking off on an 11-0 run to regain the lead and holding UD scoreless for six minutes and 14 seconds until Ames hit a three-pointer with 9:21 left to cut the Seahawk margin to 40-39.

The Hens never did regain the lead but pulled to within one point on a three-pointer by Washington at the 4:09 mark. UNC Wilmington's Andy Gunn answered with a free throw, and Spencer hit a jumper with 49 seconds left to increase the lead to 50-46.

Wentt came up with a big play with 6.7 seconds remaining as he grabbed a rebound off a UD miss and was fouled by John Goldsberry as he converted a lay-up. Wentt followed with the free throw to cut the lead to 50-49.

Goldsberry gave the Hens one last chance when he missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity less than a second later.

UD called two timeouts to set up the last play but Washington could not handle a cross-court pass from Wentt two feet beyond the three-point line and by the time he regained possession of the ball his off-balance jumper was off the mark.

UD played without starting guard David Lunn, who was sick and did not make the trip. Forward Harding Nana suffered a strained shoulder in a collision while diving for a loose ball in the first half and did not return.
