Delaware’s Ames is named CAA Player of the Week

Senior guard Mike Ames
11:59 a.m., Jan. 20, 2004--University of Delaware senior guard Mike Ames was named Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in UD’s three games last week.

Ames averaged 25.3 points per game in the three contests and set a school record for most consecutive three-point field goals made. He began the week with a 28-point performance in UD’s 80-66 win over James Madison University on Monday, going 5-for-5 from three-point range in the second half.

Ames followed with a 30-point night in the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ 82-75 loss at Drexel University on Thursday. Ames hit all four of his three-point attempts in the first half as he had 21 points before halftime. Ames also set a new UD record with nine consecutive three-pointers over two games, breaking Billy Wells' mark of eight straight set in January 2001.

The 30-point game was the second of Ames' career, making him the 13th player in UD's 99-season history to record 30 points in multiple games.

On Saturday night, Ames stepped into the spotlight again as his three-pointer with 1.8 seconds left lifted the Hens to a 62-61 win over Old Dominion University and snapped the Monarchs' seven-game winning streak. Ames finished the game with 18 points. The game-winner was his 200th career three-pointer, making him the third Hen to eclipse the milestone.

For the week, Ames was 25-for-45 from the field (55.6 percent), including 15-for-30 (50.0 percent) from three-point range. On the season, Ames ranks in the top 10 in six CAA statistical categories and is leading the conference in three-point field goal percentage (43.8 percent).

The 6-foot 3-inch guard is also fourth in the CAA in scoring (17.9 points per game), third in three-point field goals made (2.33 per game), seventh in field goal percentage (50.6 percent), second in free throw percentage (86.8 percent) and 10th in steals (1.7 steals per game).

UD will host the College of William & Mary at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.
