MBA students lend a hand at Cape Henlopen

3:41 p.m., June 4, 2004--On Friday, May 21, 12 MBA students put aside their books and notes and traded a day of studying for a day of volunteer work at Cape Henlopen State Park.

Responding to a call for volunteers by Delaware’s director of volunteerism for state parks and AmeriCorps, the group from UD’s Lerner College of Business and Economics spent two hours painting structures and landscaping before breaking for a picnic lunch and some recreation on the beach.

“Students in the MBA program have Fridays off, so this was a good opportunity to let off some end-of-semester steam and get out in the fresh air,” Adam Walker, 30, a volunteer going into his second year of UD’s MBA program, said. “It also provided a different way to give back to the community.”

Spearheaded by Amy Estey, MBA program manager, the volunteer effort ran from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., with students dividing into smaller groups to tackle separate tasks.

Afterward, students reconvened for a picnic lunch on one of the piers before exploring the park’s dunes and towers.

“There is a great amount of history in Cape Henlopen State Park,” Walker said. “Visitors can learn a lot about World War II by walking around and exploring. The experience was good for the international [MBA student] contingent, who often don’t see more of Delaware than Newark.”

Walker, who is the incoming president of the MBA student council, said he hopes to institute a day of MBA volunteerism once a semester. He is already brainstorming ideas for next year.

“Helping at a state park is a great activity for the spring semester, so we hope to do something like this again next year,” he said. “As for the fall, we might do something related to 9/11, which falls on a Saturday this year.”

Walker is open to suggestions for future volunteer efforts. To submit ideas, e-mail him at [awalker@udel.edu].
