Math profs produce six books

3:13 p.m., June 22, 2004--A recent count from the Department of Mathematical Sciences totals six books written or edited by three faculty members in the past year and a half. “Since book publication is not the primary venue for disseminating research results in the mathematical sciences, this year’s output is truly commendable,” David Edwards, associate professor of mathematics, said.

Robert P. Gilbert, Unidel Professor of Mathematical Sciences, is a coauthor of “Marine Acoustics: Direct and Inverse Problems” and “Progress in Analysis.” His research is related to partial differential equations and homogenization using models of the seabed and biological mechanics. He also is interested in underwater acoustics and imaging. The founder of the International Society for Analysis, Applications and Computations, Gilbert is the founding editor of two journals, “Complex Variable: Theory and Application” and “Applicable Analysis.” He received the von Humbolt Foundation Senior Scientist award in 1975 and 1986 at the Freie Universität in Berlin and received the British Science Council Research Award in 1981. He has served as a guest research professor at several universities, including Glasgow, Oxford, Hahn-Maltner Institute in Berlin, Technical University of Copenhagen and others. A conference honoring him was held in Graz, Austria, in 1997 and another in Frejus, France, this year. Gilbert earned his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Carnegie Mellon University.

Judy A. Kennedy, professor of mathematics, is a coauthor of “Dynamics of Topologically Generic Homeomorphisms,” a research monograph. She also is coeditor of “The Theory of Chaotic Attractors,” a collection of seminal work in chaotic dynamical systems, which is slated for publication in the near future. She has published extensively in her field of research and dynamics/topology and is an editor of the journal, Topology Proceedings. She received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Auburn University and joined the UD faculty in 1986.

Peter Monk, Unidel Professor of Mathematical Sciences, is the author of “Finite Element Methods for Maxwell’s Equations.” Monk’s research involves numerical methods for partial differential equations and inverse-scattering problems. He has published extensively in his field and serves as principal editor of the Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics and on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis. He has been a visiting professor or academic visitor at Oxford University and the University of Utah. A graduate of Cambridge University, Monk received master’s and doctoral degrees from Rutgers University.
