Two to receive Webber math awards Thursday

5:18 p.m., May 4, 2004--Two retired math teachers will be honored with the G. Cuthbert Webber Award at 4 p.m., Thursday, May 6, in 114 Purnell Hall. One served as cochairperson of the commission that created the state’s math standards, and the other is the long-time chairman of the state’s Junior High Math League.

Johnny Lott, president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, will speak at the ceremony honoring Linda B. Selwood and Earl W. Quillen for advancing math education in Delaware. The award is name for the late G. Cuthbert Webber, a University of Delaware mathematics professor from 1937-81.

Selwood, now a consultant who works with middle school mathematics teachers in several states, is a long-time Brandywine School District faculty member who was co-chair of the Delaware Mathematics Curriculum Framework Commission that developed standards for the teaching of mathematics in Delaware. In 1987, she received the national Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics education.

Earl Quillen, now teaching math full time at Salisbury University, will be honored for his work as chair of the Junior High Math League for 15 years. Quillen, who worked in the Indian River School District for 35 years, was a member of the team that brought the Smithsonian Science Project to Delaware.

Lott will speak on high-quality math instruction at the presentation ceremony.

President David P. Roselle, a mathematician and former secretary of the Mathematical Association of America, will address the group. Dr. Webber’s son, George, and his grandson, Andrew, also will speak.
