‘Empowering the Disadvantaged’ lecture set April 29

12:05 p.m., April 26, 2004--Subodh Wagle, an adjunct professor in UD’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP) and a trustee of Prayas, a nonprofit public charitable trust based in Pune, India, will discuss “Empowering the Disadvantaged: Prayas Initiatives as a Praxis of Public Interest,” from noon-1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 29, in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center.

The free public event is part of the Energy and Environmental Policy Colloquium and is sponsored by CEEP and the CEEP graduate program.

Prayas provides research, analysis, public education, advocacy and knowledge support for grassroots and civil society organizations, with particular focus on the interests of the disadvantaged sections of Indian society.

Wagle, whose awards include the George Herbert Ryden Prize for the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in the Social Sciences and the Mark A. Haskell Award, is the first recipient of CEEP’s Alumni Achievement Award.

Wagle’s interests include electricity sector policies and conceptual strategic models of development. Besides working and publishing extensively on the controversy over Enron’s Dabhol project in India, Wagle has published papers on sustainable development and the current debate over sustainable livelihoods.

Wagle received a bachelor’s degree in technology form the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, India, and earned a doctorate with CEEP at UD.
