Alrich, Metzbower compete in North-South Classic

Matt Alrich
1:36 p.m., June 8, 2004--Two University of Delaware men’s lacrosse standouts, attack Matt Alrich and midfielder Ryan Metzbower, have been selected to participate in the 63rd annual U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) North-South Classic to be played at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 12, at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y.

Alrich and Metzbower will be members of the South team, which includes players from Johns Hopkins, Virginia, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Villanova, Penn, Georgetown, North Carolina, Towson, Denver, Maryland and Loyola.

Alrich and Metzbower capped their senior seasons by leading UD to a 10-6 record and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament.

At one point during the season, the Fightin’ Blue Hens, led by Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw, were ranked as high as No. 11 in the NCAA Division I poll.

Ryan Metzbower
Alrich led the Hens in scoring for the second straight year with 34 goals and 12 assists for 46 total points. He was a first team All-CAA selection this year and a second team selection in 2003, when he had 35 goals and six assists.

Both Alrich and Metzbower scored more than 100 points in their UD careers, Alrich with 83 goals and 20 assists and Metzbower with 75 goals and 26 assists.

Metzbower, a four-year standout for the Hens, had 15 goals, two of which were game winners, and six assists this season. He was a second team All-CAA selection the last two seasons and in 2000 was the America East Conference Rookie of the Year.
