UD in the News, Dec. 19, 2003

2:18 p.m., Dec. 19, 2003--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Coverage of the NCAA Division I-AA football championship game is widespread.

The Dec. 19 Philadelphia Inquirer features UD Head Coach K.C. Keeler, and that follows previous stories about quarterback Andy Hall and defensive end Shawn Johnson. The Dec. 18 issue includes a Bill Lyons column that bears the headline "What Delaware can teach the big boys."

The Cherry Hill Courier Post also has a story on Keeler, and the Syracuse Post Standard writes about a bet between the governors of the two states. Gov. Minner has put up an Allen's chicken and a block of scrapple, among other items. Gov. Pataki is betting a turkey. Locally, the Wilmington News Journal featured a front page story and a special section, in addition to sports section coverage. Even The New York Times has taken an interest, given that a New York university is in the final.

Sheldon D. Pollack, University of Delaware professor of business law, is quoted in the cover story, "Helter Shelter," of the December 2003 issue of The American Lawyer. In the story, Pollack is described as "a leading expert on tax shelters."

Edward Ratledge, director of the Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research at the University of Delaware, is quoted in a Dec. 19 USA Today story concerning population. Delaware has one of the nation's highest growth rates. "Remember, we're a no sales tax state, and Sussex County has very, very low property taxes," he told the newspaper. Ratledge also is quoted in a Wilmington News Journal story on growth.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Dec. 19 Agence France Presse story concerning changes at the New York Stock Exchange, including the announcement that John Thain will be the new chief executive officer. Elson said he believes more institutional investors should sit on the new NYSE board, saying, "The way to restore confidence in that exchange is to have effective oversight by the board. That goes back to the idea of having a majority on the board coming from the ranks of the large institutional investors because they have, frankly, the greatest motivation to effectively ensure the regulations are being enforced."

ALUMNI

John Sherman, who received a Ph.D. in geology at UD in 1976, is featured in the December 2003 issue of Delaware Today magazine. The article concerns his Creations Fine Woodworking Gallery in Hockessin
