University of Delaware Athletics Director Edgar Johnson is quoted in a Dec. 9 Washington Post column by Michael Wilbon, who is unhappy with the Bowl Championship Series result and would prefer a playoff similar to that in NCAA Division I-AA. The University of Delaware's Extreme 2003 expedition to hydrothermal vents deep in the Pacific Ocean is under way, drawing coverage from coast to coast as students participate through telephone calls to the research submersible Alvin and through e-mails to the scientists aboard the research vessel Atlantis. Most recently, a CBS television affiliate in Anchorage, Alaska, did a story. Charles Elson, UD’s Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Corporate Board Member magazine story on the new moral compass required by directors. "For far too long," Elson said, "companies have ignored shareholder votes and resolutions." He also is quoted in a separate story on the need for preparation by directors, saying, "You have to study the business. You have to be aware of industry trends, what others are saying about the company and how well management is responding." A Dec. 8 Associated Press story on New Jersey programs designed to help inmates escape drugs includes reference to a University of Delaware study that showed that 40 percent of graduates of prison programs remained drug-free a year after their release, compared with 25 percent of nongraduates.
