11:45 a.m., Nov. 5, 2003--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

The University of Delaware's plans for a new Center for the Arts are reported in a front page story in the Nov. 5 Wilmington News Journal at
[http://www.delawareonline.com/newsjournal/local/2003/11/05udgetsacrucial$.html].

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Nov. 5 USA Today story about chairmen sitting on one another's boards of directors and in a Nov. 5 story on The Street about tougher listing standards approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Elson told USA Today that having influence over major strategic decisions at each other's companies risks an "I'll scratch your back" image that many companies are taking pains to avoid. Concerning the tougher SEC standards, he told The Street: "I wish they had gone further, but I think we are a lot further along than we were two years ago. I think this is clearly a step in the right direction."

A column in the Nov. 5 Portland Oregonian about a U.S. Senate hearing on college football's Bowl Championship Series notes that many, including UD graduate Joe Biden, used the opportunity to put in a plug for their alma maters. Columnist David Sarasohn writes: "Intoxicated by the moment, Biden went on to reminisce about his time playing for the University of Delaware, which no formula would ever put into a national championship game. At the time, he recalled, he 'actually thought I could play flanker back for the New York Giants. I know that's ridiculous, but I believed it.'"
