10:27 a.m., Oct. 28, 2003--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in an Oct. 27 Wall Street Journal story on the Frank Quattrone mistrial and the 1990s Silicon Valley excesses the case exposed. "The practices that were revealed are, frankly, not very flattering," Elson said. While Valley entrepreneurs have been viewed very positively for their innovation and exuberant spirit, Elson told the newspaper that what emerged from the trial was a "tarnished version" of a group "that acted in economic self-interest."

The University of Delaware's Rullo Stadium is cited as a key reason for increased interest in Delaware high school field hockey players in an Oct. 28 story in the Wilmington News Journal. The story notes that many of the country's leading programs, including the nationally ranked Fightin' Blue Hens, are finding talented players in the state.

The Oct. 27 Syracuse Post-Standard has picked up the Associated Press story on the book “The Last Ridge” by McKay Jenkins, associate professor of English at UD.

Sheldon Pollack, professor of accounting and management information systems in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, is quoted in an Oct. 26 Chicago Tribune story concerning tax shelters. "Unless you're a lawyer or a tax expert, you won't understand these deals," Pollack, an expert on tax policy, told the Tribune. "They create layers of different legal entities that obfuscate the whole deal."

Timothy Targett, professor of marine studies, is quoted in an Oct. 26 Wilmington News Journal story concerning pressures on Delaware's fisheries. Overfishing is a major issue, he told the News Journal, adding, "We can fish down the fish capacity to economic extinction." Targett cited federal and regional management efforts that have helped populations of weakfish and striped bass recover.

The Delaware Technology Park and UD get a mention in a story in the Oct. 26 Lafayette Advertiser in Louisiana, where a technology park is being developed adjacent to the University of Louisiana Lafayette. The center does have competition, the story notes, citing "The 7,000-acre Research Triangle Park in North Carolina; the Georgia Technology Park in Atlanta; the Delaware Technology Park next to the University of Delaware; and the Tri-Cities Science and Technology Park in Richland, Wash."

Jim Soles, Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations, is quoted in an Oct. 26 Charlotte Observer roundup concerning state political primaries. "Delaware is a state you could probably come in and make a big splash without too much labor or too much money," Soles told the newspaper.

The Delaware Data Mapping and Integration Laboratory, which recently won national recognition, was featured in the Oct. 25 Wilmington News Journal. The story cites the work of John Callahan, Tina Callahan and Dick Sacher of UD Information Technologies and William (Sandy) Schenck of the Delaware Geological Survey.

ALUMNI
