3:15 p.m., Oct. 15, 2003--James E. Elfers of the University of Delaware Library, who wrote a book about major league baseball's world tour of 1913-14, is quoted in an Oct. 15 Wilmington News Journal story about the resurgence of interest in baseball this season. According to the News Journal, Elfers gave a slew of reasons why a World Series appearance by the Chicago Cubs "would spell disaster for the country. Those ranged from their first appearance in the World Series in 1906 (San Francisco earthquake) to their 1929 attempt (beginning of the Great Depression). Even so, he'd rather see them beat the Yankees. 'I hate the Yankees that much,' he said."

Fightin' Blue Hen football fans are featured in an Oct. 15 Wilmington News Journal story about tailgating traditions. The story quotes Tom Smith of Dover, who steamed clams prior to the home game against the College of William & Mary, and Harold and Bobbin Smith of Middletown, who prepared beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon.

The University of Delaware public forum on foreign policy and international law was covered in the Oct. 15 Wilmington News Journal.

Gordon Johnson, a University of Delaware agricultural extension agent, is quoted in an Oct. 15 Baltimore Sun story concerning this year's pumpkin crop. In Delaware, record rainfalls have caused problems. "We've had a lot of losses," Johnson said. "There are some operations that have had near-total failure.... Some had what I would call a fair season."

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in an Oct. 14 Chicago Tribune story concerning public dissatisfaction with corporate boards of directors. "The keys to corporate governance are independence and equity ownership of public company directors," Elson said. "Independence from management gives you objectivity, while substantial equity ownership gives you an incentive to exercise your objectivity appropriately."
