10:08 a.m., April 2, 2004--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, staff and alumni.

Ralph Begleiter, Rosenberg Professor of Communication, is quoted in an April 2 Reuters story about how the gruesome images from Falluja could affect public support for the war in Iraq. "It will be interesting to see if this is a watershed, a turning point where people start to think that the Bush administration's arguments that things in Iraq are generally going well does not match what they are seeing on TV," Begleiter told Reuters. "If that happens, we will see the beginning of the emergence of a credibility gap, which would be a major problem for the Bush administration.”

Begleiter also is quoted in an April 2 Wilmington News Journal story concerning the launch of Air America, the new liberal radio network. He said conservative talk shows “probably reached its peak of political effectiveness in 1994 with Newt Gingrich and the Republican takeover of Congress.”

Leland Ware, Louis L. Redding Professor, is coauthor of an article in the April 2 Chronicle of Higher Education concerning the lasting impact of the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in an April 1 Wall Street Journal story about Intel Corp. plans concerning shareholders’ power over compensation and corporate stock option plans. Elson also is quoted in an April 1 Reuters story concerning regulatory changes to stock options and in an April 1 Newsday story concerning the Dolan family’s control over Cablevision Systems Corp.

Fabrice Veron, director of UD’s Air-Sea Interaction Laboratory, is quoted in an April 1 San Diego Union-Tribune story concerning new studies of the region where sky meets sea. "Compared to disciplines like astronomy or physics, oceanography is a new science. And systematic questions about the interface really didn't begin until maybe the 1950s," Veron said.

ALUMNI

Carl J. Truscott, a 1979 UD graduate with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, has been named director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives by Attorney General John Ashcroft.
