Timothy Targett, UD professor of marine studies, is featured in a Jan. 26 Wilmington News Journal story about research on fish in the Delaware inland bays.

Richard Venezky, UD Unidel Professor of Education, is quoted in a Jan. 25 Boston Globe column concerning a renewed emphasis on spelling in the classroom. "My sense is we are in a transition," Venezky said. "Teachers aren't comfortable not teaching spelling. On the other hand, they feel if they spend a lot of time on it, they will be accused of making frivolous use of time in the classroom."

Sunil Agrawal, UD professor of mechanical engineering, is featured in a Jan. 24 Wilmington News Journal story about his research on flying robotic devices. A brief version of the story has been picked up and distributed by the Associated Press.

Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Jan. 24 San Francisco Chronicle story about Hewlett-Packard, which he said should reach out to those who disagreed with its controversial merger with Compaq. "The question is where is the representative of the 48 percent of the shareholders who disagreed with the merger," Elson said. "In the end, it's really how they reach out to the other group that is really important."

Elson also is quoted in a Jan. 24 New York Times story about the battle between Conrad Black and Hollinger International and in a Jan. 16 Los Angeles Times story about state pension administrators applying pressure on mutual funds for disclosure of key information. "They represent a substantial amount of capital," he said, "and their views need to be taken seriously."

John Antil, UD associate professor of business administration, is quoted in a Jan. 23 Detroit News story about Super Bowl advertising. "You&Mac246;ve got viewers going in a hundred different directions in television, but with this game, you know you&Mac246;ll get them all," Antil said. "This is the one place where the mass audience still is every year."

Anne Boylan, UD professor of history, is quoted in a Jan. 18 Wilmington News Journal story concerning the show Constant Star, based on the life of African American journalist Ida B. Wells. "Women have not been included in some sense in standard histories. Blacks have tended to be marginalized in women's history," Boylan said. "That's starting to change."

Figure skater Kimberly Meissner, who trains at the University of Delaware, was featured in the Jan. 17 Baltimore Sun. Meissner won the junior ladies title at the national championships held in Atlanta.

A Jan. 16 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story on volunteers who have flocked to Iowa to support candidates in the Democratic caucuses notes that UD freshman Morgan R. Mordecai is among the so-called winterns working on the campaign of John Kerry.

USA Today reported Jan. 15 on a new heat health warning system presented during a meeting of the American Meteorological Society, and noted that researchers at the University of Delaware contributed to the system.

Linda Gottfredson, UD professor of education, is quoted in a Jan. 14 United Press International story on measures of the intelligence of President Bush. "I recently converted Bush's SAT score to an IQ using the high school norms available for his age cohort. Educational Testing Service happened to have done a study of representative high school students within a year or so of when he took the test. I derived an IQ of 125, which is the 95th percentile," she told UPI.
