A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni. John Antil, University of Delaware associate professor of business administration, is quoted in a Jan. 14 Wilmington News Journal story about the brisk trade in Philadelphia Eagles gear as fans prepare for Sunday's NFC championship game against the Carolina Panthers. "Sports is such a major part of our culture, and we display our affinity for any icon, whether it be military, sports or business, by showing it in one way or another," Antil said. "Clothing is a very popular way." Shuaib Meacham, UD assistant professor of education, is featured in a story on the BET web site for his use of hip-hop and rap music to teach students in middle schools and high schools. Thomas Brill, UD professor of chemistry and biochemistry, is quoted in a Jan. 13 Philadelphia Inquirer story concerning controversial U.S. Army plans to treat and dispose of the nerve agent VX in New Jersey. "I think there is some controversy about how efficient the process is in destroying the agent," Brill said. "Basically, at what level can you say you've destroyed the material?" Charles Elson, Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Jan. 13 Bloomberg News story about changes at Oracle Corp., where Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison has relinquished his position as chairman of the board and has named Chief Financial Officer Jeff Henley the new chairman. "This is a reshuffling of titles without a great deal of corporate governance significance, because the chair would not be considered an independent director," Elson said. John Bishop, UD associate vice president for counseling and student development, is quoted in a Jan. 11 Philadelphia Inquirer story on the rate of divorce among parents of college students. "It's very unsettling," Bishop said. "Along with everything else they have to cope with, they feel that, literally, they can't go home again because home no longer exists. That can make some of the adjustments even more daunting. They may have a greater sense that I have to make it here because there isn't any there to go back to." Bishop was interviewed by radio station WDEL-AM on Jan. 7 on results of the most recent Harvard School of Public Health survey concerning high-risk drinking on campus, which shows significant declines in destructive behaviors by students. ALUMNI Charles Lewis, a University of Delaware graduate who heads the Center for Public Integrity, was the guest on the Jan. 9 NOW with Bill Moyers program. He discussed the center's new book, The Buying of the President 2004. Mike Campbell, who holds a UD bachelor's degree in economics and accounting, has been named vice president of corporate financial reporting by the Government Employees Insurance Co., the GEICO board has announced.
