12 p.m., Jan. 12, 2004--A roundup of recent news items about UD, its faculty, students, staff and alumni.

Charles Elson, University of Delaware Edgar S. Woolard Jr. Chair and director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, is quoted in a Jan. 12 story in The New York Times concerning bonus payments made by Hollinger International to former chairman Conrad Black and other top executives. Elson said the fact that the bonuses were paid from an operating unit was unusual. "That sort of payment is not in the ordinary course of business, and it raises questions,'' he said. "For example: Was the full board aware that the wholly owned subsidiary made an extraordinary payment to officers of the parent and subsidiary?''

Elson was a guest on the CNNfn Street Sweep program on Jan. 8, discussing reforms at the New York Stock Exchange.

Christine Zukowski, a member of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club, is featured in the Jan. 12 Wilmington News Journal, after winning the ladies novice title at the national championships.
