Six student groups join Heart Walk teams

9:45 a.m., Sept. 5, 2003 --Attention students: UD’s Heart Walk teams need your help.

The American Heart Association Heart Walk, an annual event that raises funds to fight heart disease, takes place Sunday morning, Sept. 14, at the Wilmington Riverfront. Student participants will receive free transportation to Wilmington and back, and everyone who joins a UD team gets a free YoUDee Heart Walk T-shirt.

Richie Holland, manager of human resources, said that so far six student groups have registered for the event, including members of the cheerleading team, fraternities and sororities.

“This is a great way for UD student groups to represent UD in a positive light and to focus positive attention on their organization,” Holland said.

Since 1998, volunteers from the University community have laced up their sneakers to place UD among the top contributors. Last year, approximately 100 UD employees, students, alumni and friends raised $12,736.

This year, the team’s goal is to raise $15,000, according to Marianne Carter, director of UD’s Employee Wellness Center. “If we are able to recruit 300 participants to represent UD,” she said, “this goal is well within our reach.”

There is no minimum amount of money that must be raised in order to participate, but all walkers are asked to raise some funds by soliciting donations from friends, family, coworkers and neighbors before the event.

Registration begins at 8 a.m., Sept. 14, with opening ceremonies and warm-up at 8:45 a.m. In addition to the run at 9 a.m and the walk at 9:10 a.m., other activities include team photos, health screenings, massages, children’s activities, refreshments and entertainment.

Walk information and photos from past walks are on display in the lobby of McDowell Hall.
