Letter sent to all Residence Hall students from the Office of Residence Life

5:45 p.m., Sept. 17, 2003--As you may be aware, there is a strong storm approaching our region. The University will be posting important information about the possible effects of Hurricane Isabel. You should continue to check the UD home page for the latest information.

It is possible that the approaching storm could bring heavy rains and high winds beginning Thursday, Sept. 18. Possible hazards resulting from the storm may include power outages, flooding, flying debris and downed trees. It is important that all students take appropriate precautions.

The Residence Life staff has been informed about emergency preparations and will be holding building meetings tonight to update you. Please check with your Hall Director for the time and location of your building meeting. Dining halls will maintain regular hours and Dining Services staff have made preparations to serve meals in the event of power outages.

In extreme weather, the safest place for you to be in is your residence hall, NOT outside. We ask that all residence hall students take the following precautions:

  • Close and lock all windows before Thursday morning. Close drapes, shades or blinds.
  • If you live in a basement or ground floor, move items to a higher location, or raise items up off floor. Pick up all computers and other equipment that are easily moved. Please pay special attention to areas that have flooded in the past.
  • Remove all trash to the exterior dumpsters by Wednesday night. Trash will be collected on Thursday morning and not again until Saturday morning. This will reduce the possibility of debris being blown about the campus as well as reducing residents exposure to dangerous weather conditions. Please store trash in plastic bags to prevent odor and pest control issues.
  • Bring your bike inside, if it can be safely stored within your room.

The Residence Life staff will be available throughout this weather emergency and thanks you in advance for your cooperation.
