Multiculturalism lecture, workshop set April 7

11:59 a.m., March 22, 2004--Gary Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs and director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Columbia University, will discuss multicultural issues during a workshop and a lecture on Wednesday, April 7, at the University of Delaware.

The free public events are part of a celebration of Asian heritage by the UD’s Office of Multicultural Programs.

The workshop, “Integrating a Multicultural Curriculum,” will be held at 3:30 p.m., in Room 109 of the Willard Hall Education Building.

A lecture, “Why Muticulturalism Matters,” will take place at 7 p.m., in the Trabant University Center Theatre.

Okihiro has authored several books on U.S. history and African history, including “Margins and Mainstreams: Asians in American History and Culture” (1994) and “The Columbia Guide to Asian American History” (2001).

A past president of the Association for Asian American Studies, Okihiro also has received a lifetime achievement award from the American Studies Association.

The events, held in conjunction with “50 Years After Brown: Has There Been Social Transformation,” are sponsored by the Asian Heritage Council of the Office of Multicultural Programs, the Asian American Pacific Islander Caucus, East Asian Studies, the Center for Black Culture and the Hispanic and Latin American Concerns Office.
