UD women’s basketball falls to Old Dominion

1:21 p.m., March 13, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team mounted a spirited comeback but ultimately fell 73-62 to top-seeded Old Dominion University in a Colonial Athletic Association semifinal game on Friday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who completed the season 19-10, are holding out hope for a second straight invitation to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. Bids will be announced Sunday evening.

Old Dominion will face George Mason in the conference championship game with the winner earning the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Amanda Blackstone led the Hens with a career-high 17 points while guard Tyresa Smith added 14 points and six steals. Second team All-CAA forward Tiara Malcom was held to nine points.

For Old Dominion, Myriah Spence scored 18 points, Monique Coker 11 points, Max Nhassengo 10 and Lawona Davis and Shareese Grant nine each.

Hot-shooting Old Dominion jumped out to a 42-22 halftime advantage but UD fought back with an 11-3 run as Tiffany Young scored four points, Alena Koshansky nailed a three-pointer and Malcom converted four straight free throws to cut the lead to 68-62 with 1:34 left.

But Old Dominion clamped down as Davis and Spence each hit two free throws in a span of 21seconds and Grant hit another one to secure the victory. The Hens did not convert a field goal in the final 2:23.
