Heart Walk captains sought for UD teams

3:02 p.m., June 3, 2004--The University of Delaware once again will participate in the American Heart Walk to be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 12, on the Riverfront Walkway in Wilmington.

“We are currently working to recruit Heart Walk captains,” Marianne Carter, director of UD’s Employee Wellness Center, said. “Heart Walk captains recruit a team of about 10 persons and serve as a contact and resource for the team.”

More than 4,000 Delawareans, including 120 UD participants, made the 3-mile trek on Wilmington’s riverfront last September. UD’s contingent raised a record $13,709, placing ninth among the 50 Delaware company sponsors that participated in the event.

“This is an opportunity to show others that the UD community has a big heart,” Carter said. “We want the University to have a huge presence at this event. YouDee and the UD cheerleaders will be there, and we're hoping to get lots of students, employees, alumni and friends of UD to walk on behalf of the University.

“Individuals willing to help us out as Heart Walk captains are needed,” Carter said. “These volunteers are the key to a successful event."

Besides motivating team members to raise funds, Heart Walk captains are responsible for turning in the teams’ money on the day of the walk and identifying which team members earn incentives. Walkers can earn prizes based on how much they collect.

“This is a great way for UD student groups to represent UD in a positive light and to focus positive attention on their organization,” Richie Holland, manager of human resources, said. Student organizations interested in becoming Heart Walk participants should e-mail Erik Bashford in Human Resources at [bashford@udel.edu].

“The Office of Human Resources and the Employee Wellness Center have teamed up to support this great cause, which helps to fight a disease that affects nearly every family in our community,”
Holland said.

“Heart disease is America’s leading cause of death, and this is not just a ‘man’s disease’—cardiovascular disease claims more women’s lives than the next seven causes of death combined,” Carter said. “By participating in events that benefit the American Heart Association, we can support research and educational efforts that will help reduce the
number of Americans affected by heart disease.”

For more details, or to volunteer as a captain or walker, call Richie Holland at 831-2059, call Carter at 831-1109 or send e-mail to at [mcarter@udel.edu].
