Blue Hens finish fourth at Hofstra golf tournament
11:10 a.m., Oct. 20, 2003--Freshman Matt Grobstein finished second to lead the University of Delaware golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Hofstra Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Bethpage State Park.
Grobstein, who entered the tournament having averaged 81.3 in three career rounds of play, followed a two over par 72 Friday with another 72 Saturday to finish at 144. He completed the tournament six strokes behind individual champion Blake Russell of Hofstra.
Grobstein's second-place finish was the highest by a Delaware golfer this fall and the best since current UD junior captain Chase Miller placed second at the Army Invitational in 2002.
Delaware shot a team score of 298 Friday and 302 Saturday to finish at 600, good for fourth place in the two-day, 36-hole event at the 6,868-yard Bethpage course.
Host Hofstra won the tournament team title with a 590, followed by Long Island (594), Lafayette (595), Delaware and Quinnipiac (602). A total of 14 teams competed at the event.
Delaware's finish was its highest of the fall season since a second-place finish at the Wesley Fall Classic on Sept. 10.
UD freshman Joe McLister, who led the Hens in their last two tournaments, placed 17th overall as he shot scores of 77 and 74 for a 151.
Also for the Hens, sophomore B.J. Jaworski finished 22nd (153), freshman Tim Rech 31st (155) and Miller 51st (162).
UD will close out the fall season Oct. 27-28 at the John MacDonald Classic hosted by Temple University at Galloway National Golf Course in New Jersey.
