Southern Delaware Golf Outing benefits UD

4:54 p.m., June 23, 2004--To celebrate the start of the summer season and to help raise money for UD, about 120 golfers participated in the fourth annual Aramark Southern Delaware Golf Outing, held Tuesday, June 1, at the Baywood Greens Golf Course in Long Neck. The event is organized by the Office of Public Relations.

Although the top prizes for scoring a hole-in-one eluded tournament participants, UD’s loveable mascot YoUDee came closest to acing a hole. The top two prizes offered for getting a hole-in-one included a $10,000 prize sponsored by Jeffrey B. Martino, AS ’01, of Four Corners Financial Group, while Boulevard Ford/Lincoln-Mercury of Lewes offered a new car as a prize.

Special golf bags similar to the type used by the UD golf team and bearing the UD logo, were awarded to teams earning the lowest gross and net scores of the day.

The foursome from Miken Builders, composed of Mike Cummings, Bob Cox, Andrew McLaughlin and Lloyd Hudson, earned the lowest gross score of 55. Scoring the lowest net total, 109, was the Wachovia team of Dave Goll, Doug Griese, Charles Burton and Steve Heigif.

The closest-to-the-pin prize for men went to Griese, while the women’s prize went to Milbrey Jacobs, of Stamford Screen Printing. Long-drive prizes for women and men respectively went to Bonnie Jean “B.J.” Ferguson, UD head softball coach, with a UD foursome, and Jeff Moyer of the Richards, Layton & Finger team.

“I’m always impressed with how much fun the golfers have at Baywood Greens,” Sharon Harris, assistant director in UD’s Office of Public Relations, said. “They really respond to the beautiful setting and we put on a high-quality event that’s also relaxed and fun-filled.”

Aramark catered the lunch and dinner at the event. Other sponsors included Bayhealth Medical Center, James Boyer, Whiting-Turner, Liberty Mutual, Stamford Screen Printing and Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling.

“Aramark’s sponsorship of this event is an example of our strong partnership,” Eric Nelson, UD advertising and marketing manager, said. “Their support is what makes this outing not only possible, but also allows us to make it such a memorable day.”

An advisory committee includes Edward J. Bennett, BE ’59; Richard Cecil, AS ’52; William Haughey Jr., BE ’69; Barbara Rider; Gary Simpson, AG ’69, MS ’72 AG; and Joan Thompson, AS ’49.
