UD golf team second in Scotty Duncan Tournament

Steve Banks
10:15 a.m., April 26, 2004--The host University of Delaware men's golf team posted its best tournament finish of the spring by finishing second in the team standings of the Scotty Duncan Memorial Golf Tournament completed on Sunday afternoon at Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown.

UD junior Steve Banks placed second overall, the highest finish of the spring by any Fightin’ Blue Hen. Banks shot 72 on Saturday and 76 on Sunday for a score of 148, just two strokes off the winning score.

Temple University, led by individual champion Pat O'Neill, took the team title with a two-day, 36-hole total of 602 strokes over the 7,003-yard, par 71 course.

UD finished in second place, 12 strokes off, and was followed by Longwood, St. Joseph's and Villanova in the 10-team field.

Banks' second-place finish equaled the best by a UD player this season, matching a second by freshman Joe McLister at the Temple Invitational and a second by freshman Matt Grobstein at the Hofstra Invitational during the fall season.

UD placed three golfers in the top 10. In addition to Banks, McLister tied for fourth place at 151 (77-74), and defending tournament champion Dan Spiker was 10th overall at 154 (72-82).

Also for the Hens, J.J. Oakley was 29th, Tyler Kupper 34th, Tim Rech 36th, Devin Milowe 45th and B.J. Jaworski 47th.

The tournament, held in memory of former UD coach Scotty Duncan, was the final action of the 2003-04 season for the Hens.
