Upgrades spruce up Gold Ice Arena

New ice—complete with the interlocking UD and the YoUDee ice hockey logo—has been installed in UD’s Gold Ice Arena.
4:28 p.m., June 24, 2004--A series of recent upgrades to the offices, skating surface and public areas at the Gold Ice Arena has turned UD’s oldest ice-skating arena into a state-of-the-art facility.

Built in 1971, the Gold Ice Arena, along with the Fred Rust Ice Arena, built in 1988, is part of the Ice Skating Science Development Center. The building also shares shower and dressing room facilities with UD’s Outdoor Pool.

Upgrades to the Gold Ice Arena include:

  • New concrete driveway for the zamboni room;
  • Installation of protective netting around the perimeter of the National Hockey League-sized (200 feet by 85 feet) playing/skating surface area;
  • A new Low-E (low-energy transmission) ceiling over the skating surface to help reduce refrigeration loads and energy costs, improve lighting levels and quality, eliminate moisture and condensation problems and improve appearances;
  • New paint in locker rooms and new paint and carpeting in business and staff offices;
  • Replacement of the HVAC system in business and staff offices and locker room facilities; and
  • A new roof, covering nearly an acre of surface.

“The roof was replaced by Facilities as part of its regularly scheduled maintenance program,” Jim Kaden, ice arena manager, said. “Funding for other system and physical plant upgrades was taken from the Ice Arena reserve account.”

Additional enhancements also are on tap for this summer and fall, Kaden said, including installation of new bleachers and outdoor signage in the Gold Ice Arena.

New ice—complete with the interlocking UD and the YoUDee ice hockey logo—was installed as well, Kaden said.

Changes also are planned for the Fred Rust Ice Arena, including new exterior doors, a new sound system and new paint and new carpets in the business offices.

“This seven-month project,” Kaden said, “reflects a lot of cooperation from the diverse clients who use our facility.”

They include nationally and internationally ranked skaters who train at the Ice Skating Science Development Center, the Blue Hen Club Hockey Team, youth ice hockey and high school ice hockey teams.

“We have a great variety of programs here, and the people who share the use of the ice arenas are like a family,” Kaden said. “Since reopening, we have received positive comments from staff, skaters, coaches, hockey players and the general public.”
