Stalinism in North Korea topic of May 12 lecture

John Merrill
4:18 p.m., May 10, 2004--John Merrill, a senior U.S. State Department official, will talk about “North Korea: Last Bastion of Stalinism,” at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, in Mitchell Hall.

Merrill, chief of the Northeast Asia Division in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, is among the government's top analysts of North Korea, a nation named by President George W. Bush as part of the "axis of evil." North Korea is believed to have developed nuclear weapons and to have shared weapons technology with other nations.

Merrill has advised several secretaries of state through negotiations with North Korea and has written many articles and several books on Korea. He has held teaching and research positions at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Georgetown University, George Washington University, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Lafayette College, Korea University and the University of Delaware.

The lecture is the last in the Global Agenda free public lecture series on “Enemies List: Not Always What They Seem,” organized by Ralph Begleiter, UD’s Rosenberg Professor of Communication and distinguished journalist in residence, and cosponsored by the University of Delaware and the World Affairs Council of Wilmington.
