UD field hockey’s Geib wins CAA Scholar-Athlete Award

UD’s Leah Geib is a CAA Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
11:53 a.m., Dec. 22, 2003--The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has named seven recipients of the Scholar-Athlete Award for the fall sports season, including University of Delaware field hockey player Leah Geib. The award honors students who have excelled on both the playing field and in the classroom.

Geib, a junior communication major, is a two-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award and was a National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic honoree in 2001. She has also been active with youth groups and camps during the summer.

A three-year standout as a forward and midfielder for the nationally ranked UD field hockey team, Geib earned second-team All-Region honors in 2002 and 2003. This season, she scored two goals and had six assists, helping lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens to the championship game of the CAA tournament.

Geib scored 10 goals and had 24 points as a freshman and tallied five goals and 13 points in 2002.

Also honored as CAA Scholar-Athlete Award winners were: Adam Otstot of the College of William & Mary in men’s cross country, Ali Henderson of the College of William & Mary in women’s cross country, Arni Gunnarsson of Hofstra University and Attila Vendegh of Old Dominion University in men’s soccer, Leah Robinson of Virginia Commonwealth University in women’s soccer and Mary Clare Coghlan of Towson University in volleyball.

Six of the award winners were members of the All-CAA first team in their respective sports in 2003, and all have achieved grade point averages of 3.59 or higher.

The CAA honors a scholar-athlete in each of its 21 championship sports. Nominees for the award must be a starter or important reserve on their team and must meet the Academic All-America minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20. The winners were selected by a vote of the sports information directors at the CAA institutions.
