Art in the Garden on exhibit until May 9

4:30 p.m., April 26, 2004--During the spring, the Clark Garden in front of Townsend Hall is transformed into a sculpture garden, showcasing the works of UD sculpture students in a natural setting of hollies, evergreens, flowering trees and shrubs. In its third year, “Art in the Garden” will be on display until May 9 and is a joint project between the art department and the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens Friends.

A reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, with an opportunity to meet the artists. At 5 p.m., John Frett, professor of plant and soil sciences and coordinator of the UD Botanic Gardens, will conduct a tour of the exhibit and the Clark Garden.

The exhibit, a collaboration between nature and art, includes works by undergraduate and graduate sculpture students. According to David Meyer, assistant professor of art, there is great variety among the sculptures which use varying media, including metal, ceramics, synthetics, cast concrete and organic material. Works in the exhibition include a dramatic 12-foot, galvanized-steel abstract sculpture by graduate student James Darr. Some works are site-specific, designed especially for their settings.

Not only is the project an excellent opportunity for students to display their work in a scenic setting, it is fun and a learning experience for the students to work together to create the art exhibit, Meyer said.
