Scott, Hemphill join UD football coaching staff

12:30 p.m., June 2, 2004--Dave Scott and Lyle Hemphill have been added to the staff of the defending NCAA Division I-AA champion University of Delaware football team, Head Coach K.C. Keeler announced Tuesday.

Scott, who will begin his second stint with the Fightin’ Blue Hens, will serve as tight ends coach and assist with special teams. He replaces Rick Brown, who served the past two seasons as tight ends coach and special teams coordinator.

Hemphill will serve as a graduate assistant coach, working with the defense. He replaces Brandon Walker, who served at UD the last two seasons before being hired as a full-time assistant at Fordham University.

Scott previously served as a defensive assistant coach from 1998-2001. Prior to joining the UD staff, Scott enjoyed a successful career as head football coach at Glasgow High School, where he won the state championship in 1989.

Scott earned his undergraduate degree in 1981 and his master’s degree in 1998 from the University of Delaware. He and his wife, Jane, reside in Wilmington.

Hemphill earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations with a minor in exercise and sports science and coaching from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., in 2002, and is pursuing a master's degree in sports administration from Neumann College in Aston, Pa.

A three-year varsity football player as a strong safety at Ursinus, he began his coaching career at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa., where he served as special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach during the 2002 and 2003 seasons. He coached two All-Americans in free safety Carlo DeAngelo and kick returner Taylor Ramos.

Hemphill's father, Joe, is one of the most successful high school football coaches in Delaware history, having served as head coach at St. Elizabeth for the last 35 seasons.
