Summer fitness program winner announced

Barbara Freda: “I have a bounce in my step, a desire to exercise and, as a bonus, I started losing weight and toning up my body.”
3:05 p.m., Aug. 20, 2003--Barbara Freda, a senior secretary in business administration, has won the Employee Wellness Center’s “Fit for Fun” grand prize—a weekend getaway to UD’s Virden Center in Lewes, donated by Conference Services.

Fit for Fun was a six-week summer fitness challenge that focused on leisure activities and encouraged participants to devote some time each day to physical activity.

“Without the programs offered through the Wellness Center, I would have been a couch potato,” Freda said. “This program challenged me to get moving on a daily basis.

“I wanted to make sure I was active at least three days a week or more, and most days I worked out for an hour,” Freda said. “It’s not only physical activity, you [have] time to unwind mentally while exercising. It’s so refreshing.”

“Setting aside time and finding enjoyable leisure time activities was the focus of the program,” Marianne Carter, director, Employee Wellness Center, said. “Participants were encouraged to set a goal for physical activity as many days per week as possible and to meet that goal.”

Employees and retirees are encouraged to sign up for the next fitness challenge, "Pathway to Wellness," which starts Sept. 14 and runs through Nov. 8. Those who register will receive a log so they can "mark" their path and progress forward every time they engage in physical activity.

"Everyone knows they should be more active, but individuals who log their physical activity tend to be more successful in meeting their goals —it's an accountability issue," according to Linda Smith, program coordinator.

Besides the benefits of increased physical activity, participants in the fall challenge will be eligible to win prizes. One winner will get a weekend getaway to Annapolis, partially donated by UNIGLOBE Charlie B. and Red Carpet Travels.

Earlybirds, those who send in their registrations by Aug. 26, will be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the UD vs. William and Mary football game on Oct. 4.
