Five field hockey players named to All-Region teams

2:55 p.m., Nov. 18, 2003--Five University of Delaware field hockey players have been named to the STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region teams announced Monday.

UD juniors Jessi Balmer and Erica LaBar were named first team All-Region and senior Jessica Breault, junior Leah Geib and freshman Katie Evans were named to the second team.

LaBar, a third team All-American in 2002, led the Fightin’ Blue Hens in scoring for the second straight season with 11 goals and 12 assists for 34 points. She had at least one point in 14 of UD’s 21 games this season. LaBar currently ranks third all-time in assists at UD with 23 and is tied for 12th in points with 69.

Balmer scored 12 goals, had three assists and finished second on the team in points with 27. She was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week twice during the season, the first time after registering her first career hat trick against Villanova. She earned the honor again two weeks later when she scored twice in the final 6:19 to help the Hens stun nationally ranked Northeastern 4-3.

Breault, who earned second team honors for the second consecutive season, had 22 points on seven goals and eight assists this season. That included two goals and an assist in a 6-5 overtime loss at Old Dominion. She graduates with 61 career points, which places her 15th all-time at UD.

Evans finished the season with seven goals and five assists. She registered her first career point with an assist in a 5-0 win over Rutgers and scored her first collegiate goal in the team's next contest against Penn. Evans recorded a point in three consecutive games on two different occasions this season and scored the lone goal in a key 1-0 win over CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth.

Geib, who earned second team honors in 2002, started all 21 games for the Blue Hens this season. She had two goals and six assists while playing both in the midfield and on defense. She capped off her best all-around season by earning 2003 All-CAA Tournament honors.

UD finished the season 14-7 overall, 6-3 in the CAA, and reached the conference tournament title game.
