Delaware field hockey clinches CAA playoff berth

10:05 a.m., Oct. 27, 2003--The nationally ranked University of Delaware field hockey team broke a four-game skid with two Colonial Athletic Association road victories over the weekend.

Jessi Balmer

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated Hofstra University 2-0 on Friday and Drexel University 2-0 on Sunday to raise their record to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in conference.

UD has just one regular season game remaining—against Towson University at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at Rullo Stadium.

UD already has clinched a spot in the four-team CAA tournament, which will be held Nov. 8-9 at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. The Hens have now qualified for postseason action for the eighth straight year under Head Coach Carol Miller.

In the victory over Drexel, played Sunday night at the University of Pennsylvania’s storied Franklin Field, UD junior All-American Erica LaBar scored both goals in the first half to provide the margin of victory.

LaBar, who increased her career goal total to 21 with her first career multiple-goal game, scored the goals just 14 minutes apart.

UD freshman goalkeeper Megan Allen had three saves in collecting her fourth shutout of the season. Delaware held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goals, including five by Jessica Breault.

LaBar opened the scoring just 11 minutes and 44 seconds into the contest when she took a feed from Lauren Carr. She followed with her second goal unassisted with 9:16 to go before halftime.

Against Hofstra, UD junior Jessi Balmer scored twice, and goalkeeper Allen made eight saves.

Balmer opened the scoring at 20:59 of the first half, scoring on a penalty stroke to give the Hens a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. Her second tally came at 48:08 when she converted a feed from LaBar for her team-high 12th goal of the season.
